A major exhibition for Barnsley Museums with Stories from The Somme

The client

Barnsley Museums have an ongoing annual programme of temporary exhibitions in their five museums. They commissioned us to design an exhibition to mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme – an exhibition that tells the stories of the servicemen of Barnsley that served in one of the bloodiest battles in history.

Exhibition identity

We wanted to create an identity that was sympathetic to the subject as well as the extensive archive collection from Barnsley Museums. Typography and colours were taken from pieces within the collections, and the use of 100 running through the heading was a clever touch to the design.

Exhibition design

We worked with the museum curators to lay out the exhibition hall and suggested a centre piece for the exhibition as a replica bunker that gave the visitor the feeling of the cramped conditions of the trenches. Infographics were created and placed throughout the exhibition to emphasise the magnitude and scale of the battle.

Exhibition promotion

It has been a pleasure to work with the Ledgard Jepson team over many years now. Their professionalism and conscientiousness is beyond question, and their flexibility and ability to meet timescales is incredibly helpful in a busy world. Their innovative approach to the design of marketing collateral, our website and exhibition interpretation is amazing and has strengthened our reach significantly. Their collaborative approval with us as client is refreshing.
