Council for British Archaeology

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

Due to cutbacks in funding, the CBA needed to increase membership numbers and attract a wider and younger audience. They approached Ledgard Jepson in early 2012 with a view to changing name and launching a new consumer facing brand.

We carried out branding workshops with CBA staff and conducted external research with their current members to gather information which then helped us to develop the new brand and its key messages.

The possibility of changing the company name was explored, but instead it was decided to use the subject matter – archaeology – as the focus of brand rather than the organisation name which would instead act as an endorsement therefore shifting the emphasis away from the academic nature that the name would suggest.

We introduced a new contemporary colour palette of strong vibrant colours and creative typography along with engaging images showing passionate archaeologists in action. An image bank of archaeological finds was also introduced to the brand to bring interest to a wider consumer audience.

A new content strategy was developed along with a fully responsive and fully content managed website.

We are pleased to be working with Ledgard Jepson on this important project which is crucial to the future of our organisation. We have been impressed by the approach taken by the company and their understanding of our needs. We look forward to working with them.
